Learning about Animals with Aussie Animals Collector Cards

Sep 26, 2013

This is a sponsored post

When we heard that Woolworths were partnering with Taronga Conservation Society to launch an exclusive collection of Aussie Animals collector cards, we were keen to head into store and check them out for ourselves.

My children, like most that I know, absolutely love animals and everything to do with animals! As a mother and a teacher, I believe that learning about and growing empathy, awareness, respect and understanding for the other living creatures that we share our world with is important for all children in order to help ensure the future of these incredible creatures. Forming their own collection of animal pictures and facts, such as the opportunity these cards present,  makes learning about animals fun and exciting and is a perfect way to get children more interested in our wildlife.

To make our shopping even more fun, the kids donned their animal suits and we headed in store. When we got there we followed some animal tracks and picked up an Activity and Collector's Album so that we would be able to organise and have somewhere to keep our cards safe.

The album is set out in a child friendly manner to make collecting, storing and learning about their animals nice and simple. It is also full of fabulous information, games and activities to further extend children's knowledge, making it a delightful and useful resource.

Learning while Grocery Shopping

The kids almost always come grocery shopping with me as the experience is always full of learning.
Some areas of knowledge that can be explored further while grocery shopping with kids are:
  • Names, types, varieties of foods
  • Colours
  • Healthy eating
  • Processes (natural food, processed food, from the ground to our mouths etc)
  • Jobs and employment
  • Society
  • Culture
  • Costs
  • Money
  • Numbers
  • Reading, letters, words
  • Portions
  • Sometimes foods
  • Language
  • Behaviour
  • Cooking and recipes and more!

When you shop regularly at the same place, you can also make new friends that make shopping there even more fun! This is our favourite butcher, Brenton. :)

How to collect your Aussie Animals cards

You don't have to do anything special to collect your Aussie Animals collector cards as you receive a free pack of 4 cards for every $20 you spend at Woolworths. They are available at the checkout now, while stocks last.

The children were delighted to receive their cards and I had a hard time stopping them from wanting to open and discover every animal before we'd even made it home!

Learning with Aussie Animals collector cards

With more than 108 cards to collect there are many opportunities for learning with your Aussie Animals collector cards both at home and in the classroom.

We started out by looking at all the different animals we'd collected. There were so many! Maddie was keen to get them organised into her album but quickly realised that she was going to need a different method of going about it or it would take her forever!

We decided the cards needed to be sorted but how to sort them? Older kids are able to sort by habitat and practice their literacy skills by reading the different environments that our animals call home. Younger children can look at the different colours of the cards that represent the different habitats and sort them that way instead.

Extend: Ask your child if there are other ways that they could also be sorted outside of their habitats. Think about different creatures, features, diets and more.

Each card is numbered from 1-108. Children find and put the corresponding number in its labelled spot in their album. You can also order the numbers and record any missing numbers still to collect.

Do you have any pairs? If you collect enough pairs you can use them to play a memory matching game. We are saving our doubles to swap with friends in order to help us collect the whole set.

We loved the quiz questions and interesting facts. (Although thanks to a popular underwater set kids cartoon, Maddie was aware of more of the facts than I was! She delighted in having her knowledge consolidated and backed up by the information on the cards) Reading, learning and discovering more about each of the creatures was a definite highlight for us.
